Air Ambulance on the pitch for Bakewell rugby accident

23 January 2012

Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) landed on a Bakewell school playing field to airlift a 13-year-old boy to hospital, on Saturday 21 January.

The teenager suffered a neck injury during a rugby match and the helicopter landed on the pitch at just after midday.

DLRAA Paramedic Dave Roberts said: "We were called in to help by our colleagues from the East Midlands Ambulance Service. They had given the patient pain relief and also fitted a neck collar. They took the decision to call us because the flight to Sheffield Children's Hospital is so much smoother than making the same journey by road. Our DLRAA Doctor on board was able to contact the teenager's Mother en route to hospital to reassure her."
