History
Our sister service Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air
Ambulance (WNAA) was established by Malcolm Hazell in
2003, with the main aim to provide a Helicopter Emergency
Medical Service (HEMS) to the counties of Warwickshire,
Northamptonshire and the Milton Keynes area.
During the first five years, the service became one of the
first in the UK to routinely provide consultants and doctors
on board the emergency aircraft enabling medical intervention at
the emergency scene.
In 2008 the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland
Air Ambulance (DLRAA) was launched, providing HEMS to the
three counties, as well as providing collaborative operations at
major trauma scenes with WNAA.
2011 saw us become one of the first, and only, Air Ambulances
registered with the Care Quality Commision (CQC) and by the end of
the year The Air Ambulance Service was born.
The launch of The Air Ambulance Service coincided with the take
over of The Children's Air Ambulance, a bespoke transfer service
for seriously ill children to specialist units for treatment
countrywide.
The Air Ambulance Service is the umbrella organisation for WNAA,
DLRAA and The Children's Air Ambulance.
